Michael Hegarty is an artist working and living in Kinsale, Co. Cork, Ireland. He graduated from the Crawford Municipal School of Art, Cork in 1981. He lived in Dublin for several years where he joined the Visual Arts Centre, then housed in Great Strand Street, Dublin in 1985. He worked as a freelance scenic artist in many Dublin theatres and for many theatre companies including the Gate and Gaiety theatres, and the Dublin Grand Opera Society. Michael had a long association with the Passion Machine Theatre Company including acting as production manager on a visit to the International Theatre Festival Kontakt in Torun, Poland in 1996. As well as curating the visual art exhibition for the Passion Machine’s 1994 Songs of the Reaper Festival at the Project Arts Centre, Dublin. Michael’s scenic and mural work in film and tv includes: In the Name of the Father directed by Jim Sheridan, 1993 and Everlasting Piece directed by Barry Levinson, 2000. Michael was artist in residence at the Fire Station Artists’ Studios, Buckingham St. Dublin, 1995-96. He curated ‘Exhibition 2001’ for Kinsale Arts Festival. He has shown in exhibitions selected by top international curators including Germano Celant, Jan Hoet and Maria deCorral. In recent years Michael has returned to college and has received a Higher Diploma in History of Art, at U.C.C. Cork in 2018. He is just finished doing a MA in Fine Art, Art and Process, at MTU Crawford Collage of Art and Design, Cork.
